Boxes make a lovely change from lugging huge boards around for cabinets and tables! The key is attention to detail and selecting the most beautiful pieces of timber for all parts of the box. I've made several for special birthday presents.

21st Birthday Treasure Chest

The clients wanted a large dove-tailed box as a 21st birthday present for their son. They were keen to use native timbers and were later thrilled to discover that whilst the walnut for the box itself was English, the single piece used for the lid was Welsh and the elm for the tray was Scottish. A truly British box! The tray incorporates a concealed drawer which has no handle but a sprung mechanism which allows it to pop open when it is pushed in slightly.

After presenting the box to their son the clients wrote - "He absolutely appreciated every bit of it and how beautifully it is crafted. We know he will cherish it dearly. Once again, Thank you so much."

Janet's Walnut Box

Janet's Walnut Box

Janet required a box as a special present for a family member. She liked the idea of the small, trapezoidal walnut box but needed something much larger to hold papers up to A4 size. So we developed the design, adding contrasting liners and base in a lovely ripple sycamore, hinged the lid with beautiful Brusso quadrant hinges and created something rather wonderful.

The figuring of the Olive Ash lid suggested the design of this box and I happened to have a piece of cedar which mirrors that figuring in the bottom.

A simple idea for a box but made out of a stunning piece of English walnut. The suede bottom finishes it off perfectly.

Sara's Elm Box

Sara's Elm Box

Sara wanted a small box in which to store her treasures. She chose elm for the main timber and left the rest to me. I took my basic dove-tailed box design and tweaked the dove tails a little bit just for the fun of it and then made a sycamore tray with suede-lined base and elm splines to sit inside the box giving three compartments. The splendid Brusso hinges hold the lid open at just the right angle and the elm just looks lovely!

The curves of this rather relaxed mirror follow the grain of the timber and the number of sides reduces from six on the outside to five around the glass.
