Al's Studio Chair
Al Greenall is a wonderful artist who has just moved to Norway and is now working from a studio overlooking a fjord near Stavanger.
His move coincided with his 30th birthday and his mother wished to mark the occasion by having a chair made for him. She wanted him to have something made from English timber to remind him of home and he wanted a low-backed seat that he could use in the studio.
This is the result - a throne fit for a Viking, I hope! It is made from olive ash from the Longleat Estate and Al's initials and the date of his birthday have been carved into the seat. Visit Al's website at http://www.algreenall.co.uk/ to see his beautiful work and the lovely setting for his studio.
Motopas Chair in Light Ash
A client's 50th birthday present to himself was this version of the Motopas chair. The lightness of the ash together with the use of slightly narrower section timbers gave me the opportunity to develop the design and make it more delicate. The customer's choice of black suede upholstery resulted in a very stylish finished piece.

Motopas Chair in English Walnut
The inspiration for this three legged chair came from a small stool brought back from Zimbabwe, the back of which had been carved out a halved tree trunk with a hole made for the seat and back leg which were also carved out of a single piece of wood. The curve of the two front legs in my version was inspired by the graceful curve of the human back as it runs down from shoulder to thigh. All the pieces for the legs have been steam-bent and then shaped by hand.
